A gongoozler is a person who enjoys watching activity on the canals in the United Kingdom. The term is also often used in a more general way to describe those who have an interest in canals and the canal life, but do not actively participate.
There are various stories as to where the term originates from but I like the one where the word may have arisen from words in Lincolnshire dialect: gawn and gooze, both meaning to stare or gape.
Foxton Locks in Leicestershire is famous for it’s two staircases consisting of five locks each and is the largest flight of such staircase locks on the English canal system. Ascending or descending usually takes about an hour to complete.
We took a ride out there on Saturday with other members of the Norwich Breakfast Club to have a little gongoozle!
