It has been ages since I last posted anything here, so here goes…
Most of you will already know that I recently spent six weeks in South Africa on a temporary work-assignment. Our sister company in Pretoria sent out an urgent SOS for assistance and I felt that it was my duty to accept!
Jess had recently been made redundant from her job, so we managed to get her out there to join me for the last few weeks. There was a Public Holiday (Bank Holiday for the Brits) that fell on a Thursday, so I took the Friday off as well to make it a long-weekend and we were able to hire a motorbike and get away for a few days.
We hired a BMW R1200GS from a business in Pretoria and headed off to Phalaborwa for the weekend. I’d not ridden a GS before and I must admit that I did enjoy riding it. Jess wasn’t too impressed being perched on the back but that is understandable as she is used to riding her own bikes. Riding pillion is a bit alien for her!
We managed to get booked in at Sunbird Lodge, which is one of our destinations during our bike tour in November, so it was an ideal opportunity to check it out. David, the owner, hails from Norfolk so we had lots to chat about. He was very friendly and helpful and the Lodge is superb, so we are already looking forward to going back.
We also made friends with Janet, one of the Kruger Park guides. She freelances for SANParks and is going to help us out with a few tours when we go back again.
